THE SONIC SELF July 17, 2008 - August 30, 2008 Opening Reception: Thursday, July 17th, 2008, 7-11 pm Events: Live Performances July, 17, 18 & 19, 2008, 6-9 pm @ Chelsea Art Museum - 556 West 22nd Street - New York, NY 10011 - 212.255.0719 From July 17th until August 30th, 2008, the Sonic Self is bringing together local and international sound artists, musicians, video/multimedia and performance artists to facilitate the exchange and development of pioneering ideas, innovative skills and practices in contemporary Sound Art discipline. The Sonic Self’ - a sound-art related exhibition aims at developing an open and direct audio-visual dialog between video and sound artists in order to expose significant similarities and differences in the growing confluence of audio and visual experiences in the emerging Sonic Culture, where; communication, sound and visual experience merge as significant pattern in the cultural sensibility towards sound and the surrounding persistent, random ‘audio architecture’ – a kind of sonic explosion that can be seen as a breakthrough of the Sonic Itself. The Sonic world (an audible space); an emerging intersection between the audio and visual experiences, based on increasing internet and digital technology inventions -- gave the sound a significant stage in the surrounding environment in the multimedia environment of contemporary culture then ever before. The exploration of the sound emergent spaces, time of audio resonance, sound design, audio-visual simulation, virtual dimension, linguistic utterances, musical performance or random ‘noise’, becomes an individual expression which could exceed its form in relation to our internal self and sonic influences. As Damian Catera says: “Sound is no longer trapped within the mechanism of the ear; its multidisciplinary aspects are reflected in a blurring of sensory experiences. Sound is tactile, visual, spatial and spiritual. These elements have long been ingrained in the experience of sound since the dawn of humanity.”

 Sample image Day One
The flight over was very smooth and uneventful. It landed an hour early and the baggage was ready by the time I went to the bank to change dollars into RMB. I made my usual stop at Jenny Lu’s for soy milk, eggs, cereal, orange juice and wine. I then set up the house. Mung had done a good job preparing the house for my return and it felt good to be back.
I set up the outside lights. Everything went smoothly, except for setting up the Internet on my laptop.
I followed the exact procedure I used before, but it said that my domain name and password did not work. Last time that was all set automatically so I would not have to do it again. On a hunch I tried my Blackberry which uses Verizon. I was told that Verizon does not work in China, but apparently its Internet feature does so I was able to receive incoming e-mails that were sent to my office address. There were only two problems with that solution. First, any attachments are minuscule and I have not yet figured out how to enlarge the font. Second, although I could reply I do not know how to originate e-mails. (...)

Sample image The former Talking Head's latest bizarre and brilliant scheme by Rob Harvilla (Village Voice) June 3rd, 2008 www.villagevoice.com "So, what do you want to know?" asks David Byrne, beaming beneath a straw fedora, as erudite and affable as ever, even with a couple busted ribs. "What's not apparent?" He's gesturing to an ornate antique organ, the only adornment to this cavernous 9,000-square-foot hall in the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan. A bewildering farm of tubes and wires runs out from the back and snakes along to the walls, the towering columns, and the pipes looming overhead, as if the instrument itself were on life support. Not much, at first blush, is apparent. (...) www.villagevoice.com |
